You will also be able to connect and interact with key project stakeholders.

ABOUT THE SDEDH PROJECT

South Africa has been focusing on hydrogen development since 2007. Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) was founded by Department of Science and Technology to support the South African participation in the nascent, but rapidly developing international platforms in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies.

As part of a national drive to create a clean, affordable and sustainable energy future for South Africa, the South African government through the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), launched the Hydrogen Society Roadmap (HSRM) in February 2022.

Science Diplomacy for Economic Development through Hydrogen (SDEDH) is an initiative of DSI’s International Office that seeks to directly support both the HSRM and the Hydrogen Commercialization Strategy for South Africa (HCSSA) through a series of local and international roundtable workshops and follow up engagements. This document serves as proposal for the roundtable workshops.

The roundtable workshops will be organized and coordinated by Stellenbosch University in partnership with Impact Hydrogen and Durban University of Technology. DSI will provide overall project oversight as well as assist with diplomatic liaison. Key objectives of the roundtable workshops are as follows:

  • Identifying new spin-of projects in order to set up first tangible parts of the hydrogen value chain (Involving SME’s and multinationals) in the selected areas
  • Establish the requirements for putting in place all enablers of the hydrogen value chain: education (skilling and reskilling), job strategies, policy framework and (international) partnerships
  • Impact by design: identifying where, in the hydrogen value chain, can South Africa incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Establish how South Africa can develop its domestic hydrogen market while becoming a preferred supplier comes to global markets (Africa at large, EU, America and Asia)
  • Leverage funding & investment as well as tangible collaborations/partnerships towards accelerated development of a socially-just transition to green hydrogen economy (including green ammonia, green steal and fuel cell components).
